Growing up in London, one of the world's financial capitals Roberts & Co. founder Barry Roberts was encouraged to study finance. A few years of study later he'd learned he hated banking. And so embarked on a more colourful and creative career by starting his first job for a long established and rather Dickensian company in London's jewellery industry.
Portobello Road Market
In 2001 online shopping existed but it was early days. eBay had only just launched in the UK and very few people had heard of it. So the easiest way to launch a business in London was on one of its many street markets. The weekend markets were the perfect side hustle while still working Monday - Friday, 9-5. So London's historic Portobello Road Market is where Barry first began selling his hand made jewellery.

From market stall to online market place. The first Roberts & Co. online store was an eBay shop. Today its hard to believe a world without iPhones and apps. But back in 2007 a Nokia with a 40mm screen was cutting edge technology. First online sale 12th June 2007.

By 2012 Roberts & Co had continued to grow. But brands are hard to build in eBay and Amazon as the platforms are the brand. So the first Roberts & Co. online home and eCommerce store launched. And the business transitioned from successful side hustle to full time job.
